Carter Page was the Russia “expert” for the Trump presidential campaign in 2016 and was of particular interest of the Russian government. Before joining the campaign, Page met with Russian SVR officers (Foreign Intel. Officers) who, according to the FBI, were potentially trying to recruit Page. Page was listed as a foreign policy advisor in the beginning part of 2016, however when Trump met with a group of “… foreign policy and national security advisers… Page was not in attendance”. In July of 2016, Page was invited to the commencement ceremony at Moscow’s New Economic School which, according to Senate Committee beliefs, was largely due to the perceived relationship Page had with Trump and Trump campaign officials. The committee believed Page had neither enough influence within the campaign nor enough information for them to utilize. In September, 2016 Page left the Trump presidential campaign due to media attention, however reports from the media about Page’s connections and activities, including those in the Steele Dossier, “remain unsubstantiated”.
